Tasting Notes for Wines - Z
Wine: Zema Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 1996
Wine Review Date: 13/09/2004 Source : Jeremy Oliver, 2006
Wine Tasting Note: A slightly herbaceous, but pleasing cooler year Coonawarra cabernet of some maturity and complexity. Its smoky, cedary bouquet reveals earthy, tobaccoey and cigarbox-like development, while the smooth and fine-grained palate of medium to full weight finishes marginally green-edged and sappy. (Coonawarra, 16.8, drink 2004-2008)
Wine: Zema Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 1998
Wine Review Date: 01/05/2000 Source : Jeremy Oliver, 2006
Wine Tasting Note: Elegant, firm and deeply flavoured Coonawarra cabernet based around marvellously ripe and inky, briary fruit whose penetrative flavours of cassis and violets are finely offset against chocolate and mocha oak. (18.3, Drink 2006-2010+, )
Wine: Zema Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 1999
Wine Review Date: 01/07/2001 Source : Jeremy Oliver, 2006
Wine Tasting Note: Tight, fine and elegant Coonawarra cabernet and one of the region's best from 1999. It's wild and floral, with a penetrative minty fragrance of violets, blackberries and dark plums, while the palate is long and creamy, with intense fruit enhanced by sweet almost gamey fine-grained French oak. (18.1, Drink 2007-2011, )
Wine: Zema Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2002
Wine Review Date: 12/07/2004 Source : Jeremy Oliver, 2006
Wine Tasting Note: Herbal aromas of cassis, dark olives and cedary oak, with leafy capsicum-like undertones. Firm, grippy but slightly sappy, its slightly under and over-ripe fruit is smoothed over by creamy oak. (Coonawarra, 15.8, 2004-2007+)
Wine: Zema Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2004
Wine Review Date: 13/07/2006 Source : Jeremy Oliver, 2006
Wine Tasting Note: A delightfully intense, elegant and tightly focused cabernet whose floral perfume of cassis, plums and small red berries overlies fresh cedar/vanilla oak. Smooth, supple and silky, its long, pristine palate of intense dark, briary berry fruits knit tightly with powder-fine tannins, finishing with a sour-edged definition of flavour. It’s long, persistent and finely crafted, reflecting truly even fruit ripeness. (Coonawarra, 18.0/93, drink 2016-2024)
Wine: Zema Estate Cluny Cabernet Blend 2001
Wine Review Date: 24/02/2003 Source : Jeremy Oliver, 2006
Wine Tasting Note: Hints of musk and meat permeate this wine’s unusually spicy and slightly cooked and concentrated aromas of dark plums, blackcurrants and currants. It reveals a core of bright ripe cassis and plum with sweet cedary oak, but its moderately full palate shows green-edged tannins and pruney influences. 16.3, drink 2003–2006+, ( )
Wine: Zema Estate Cluny Cabernet Blend 2002
Wine Review Date: 12/07/2004 Source : Jeremy Oliver, 2006
Wine Tasting Note: Slightly meaty, herbal and minty aromas of small berry fruits, with capsicum-like undertones. A lightly herbal thread runs beneath its sappy, supple and minty expression of red and black berries, before a dusty, herbal finish. (Coonawarra, 16.0, 2004-2007+)
Wine: Zema Estate Cluny Cabernet Blend 2004
Wine Review Date: 14/07/2006 Source : Jeremy Oliver, 2006
Wine Tasting Note: A supple, finely balanced and elegant blend whose violet-like fragrance of fresh balck and red berries and restrainewd cedar/vanilla oak are lifted by a light mintiness. Smooth and fine-grained, its surprisingly plush palate of pristine fresh berries, cherries and dark plums knits tightly with fine oak. It finishes long and smooth, with a lingering reminder of its fine texture and structure. (Coonawarra, 18.3/94, drink 2016-2024)
Wine: Zema Estate Family Selection Cabernet Sauvignon 19 ...
Wine Review Date: 01/01/2002 Source : Jeremy Oliver, 2006
Wine Tasting Note: There's plenty of cellaring potential in this firm, rather closed and brooding Coonawarra cabernet. Its developing bouquet of cassis and dark plums, complex earthy, musky and almost meaty character is enhanced by excellent fine-grained chocolate/cedar French oak influences. The palate is lean and stylish, bursting with a full length of dark fruit, before a firm, tight finish of balanced acidity. (17.8, Drink 2007-2011+, )
Wine: Zema Estate Family Selection Cabernet Sauvignon 20 ...
Wine Review Date: 19/07/2006 Source : Jeremy Oliver, 2006
Wine Tasting Note: An honest wine, but one made from unevenly ripened fruit. Its sweet, simple and jammy fruits are backed by assertively toasty cedar, chocolate and vanilla oak, with herbal undertones. Initially powerful, rich and flavoursome, the palate moves towards a sappy and metallic finish, with slightly cooked and green-edged fruit. (Coonawarra, 16.2/87, drink 2010-2014)
Wine: Zema Estate Family Selection Cabernet Sauvignon 20 ...
Wine Review Date: 19/04/2004 Source : Jeremy Oliver, 2006
Wine Tasting Note: Delightfully intense, concentrated and natural Coonawarra cabernet with a fragrance of violets, mulberries, darl plums, black olives, cherries and sweet cedar/coffee/vanilla oak. Its plump, juicy palate stains the mouth with vibrant, intense small berries and plums, while polished cedar/vanilla oak and firm, fine tannins provide a comfortable frame and support. 18.4, drink 2013-2021 ( )
Wine: Zema Estate Family Selection Shiraz 2002
Wine Review Date: 22/07/2006 Source : Jeremy Oliver, 2006
Wine Tasting Note: A bright, lively and spicy bouquet of small berry and plum-like fruit and restrained oak reveals meaty and herbal undertones. It’s long and restrained, with a pleasing core of concentrated spicy and peppery berry flavour backed by slightly varnishy oak and framed by fine, powdery tannins. It finishes long and savoury, with a hint of meatiness and a lingering undercurrent of lightly herbal influences. (Coonawarra, 16.8/89, drink 2010-2014)
Wine: Zema Estate Merlot 2004
Wine Review Date: 19/07/2006 Source : Jeremy Oliver, 2006
Wine Tasting Note: An elegant and fine-grained merlot with richness and plumpness of sweet berry, cherry and plum-like fruit. Its fresh, floral aromas of dark cherries, mulberries and cassis overlie restrained and lightly toasty cedar/vanilla oak. Medium to full in weight, it’s supple and juicy, with a lingering chocolatey finish. It should develop well. (Coonawarra, 17.4/91, drink 2009-2012+)
Wine: Zema Estate Shiraz 1998
Wine Review Date: 01/05/2000 Source : Jeremy Oliver, 2006
Wine Tasting Note: The best Zema shiraz yet, whose wild, briary dark cherry and blackberry fruit are penetrated by a thread of black pepper and spice. Wonderfully smooth and restrained, its intense delivery of bright, translucent fruit is tightly knit with firm, fine tannins. (18.7, Drink 2006-2010, )
Wine: Zema Estate Shiraz 2000
Wine Review Date: 01/01/2002 Source : Jeremy Oliver, 2006
Wine Tasting Note: Again, one of the most attractive Coonawarra shirazes of the season, and a delightfully spicy, floral, peppery and minty one to boot, scented with ripe raspberries, cherries and cassis and supported by sweet American oak. Laced with cloves and cinnamon, it has a fine fleshy texture and fine acids, although it lacks the length of top vintages. (16.9, Drink 2002-2005, )
Wine: Zema Estate Shiraz 2001
Wine Review Date: 24/02/2003 Source : Jeremy Oliver, 2006
Wine Tasting Note: Spicy, flavoursome medium to full-bodied shiraz of uncomplicated charm and honesty. Its vibrant, minty aromas of raspberries, blackberries and red cherries are lifted by a spicy whiff of pepper and restrained use of cedar and vanilla oak. It’s quite firm, but also fleshy and supple, and opens to reveal a pleasing depth of red berry and plum flavours. 17.0, drink 2006–2009, ( )
Wine: Zema Estate Shiraz 2002
Wine Review Date: 12/07/2004 Source : Jeremy Oliver, 2006
Wine Tasting Note: A spicy, white pepper fragrance of blackberries, plums, violets and light vanilla oak precedes a smooth, lively and lighter palate whose red and black berry flavours are framed by fine, but slightly sappy tannins. Finishes savoury, with some peppery complexity. (Coonawarra, 16.2, 2007-2010)
Wine: Zema Estate Shiraz 2004
Wine Review Date: 13/07/2006 Source : Jeremy Oliver, 2006
Wine Tasting Note: Exemplary, elegant, deeply flavoured and finely balanced Coonawarra shiraz whose fresh spicy, peppery and violet-like aromas of cassis, cherries and violets overlie restrained nuances of cedar/vanilla oak. Its long, smooth and juicy palate of essence-like shiraz fruit is neatly supported by a fine-grained spine of tightly interwoven tannin, delivering a lingering core of flavour before a meaty, savoury finish. (Coonawarra, 18.8/95, drink 2016-2024)
Wine: Zilzie Buloke Reserve Cabernet Merlot 2004
Wine Review Date: 05/12/2005 Source : Jeremy Oliver, 2006
Wine Tasting Note: This vibrant, penetrative and tightly focused blend marries the bright cassis-like flavours and fine-grained structure of cabernet sauvignon with the juicy dark plum and cherry-like qualities of merlot. Its lightly minty and menthol-like fragrance reveals a very ripe suggestion of currants, while the palate is supported by chocolate and mocha-like oak influences. There’s genuine elegance and focus, plus a well-balanced refreshing acidity at the finish. (Sunraysia, )
