Wine: Galah Shiraz 1997
Wine Review Date: 01/06/1999 Source : Jeremy Oliver, 2006
Wine Tasting Note: Deep, dark and brooding, this pungent, minty and peppery red delivers on its promises with a tarry, black palate of sour-edged plums and cassis, with clove/nutmeg spiciness and big, grippy tannins. Oak's a secondary feature of this traditional Clare style whose future is long and bright. (17.8, Drink 2009+, )
Wine: Gapsted Ballerina Canopy Cabernet Sauvignon 1998
Wine Review Date: 19/04/2004 Source : Jeremy Oliver, 2006
Wine Tasting Note: Firm, smooth and slightly retentive cool-climate wine which despite some pleasing depth of red and black berry flavours and vibrant violet-like aromas, retains a herby, minty menthol edge, along with some slightly sappy tannins. That said, it has plenty of depth, some well-integrated and assertive cedary oak, and a long, slightly tobaccoey finish. 17.0, drink 2006-2010+ ( )
Wine: Gapsted Ballerina Canopy Cabernet Sauvignon 2001
Wine Review Date: 03/07/2004 Source : Jeremy Oliver, 2006
Wine Tasting Note: Elegant, smooth and cedary red with a lightly herbal, minty aroma of red berries, cherries and plums supported by restrained vanilla oak. Supple and tight-knit, its palate is more powerful than the nose would suggest, presenting intense small red and black berry fruit entwined with creamy cedary oak and framed by tight-knit tannins. (16.6, 2006-2009+)
Wine: Gapsted Ballerina Canopy Cabernet Sauvignon 2002
Wine Review Date: 04/07/2006 Source : Jeremy Oliver, 2006
Wine Tasting Note: Framed by fine, loose-knit firm tannins and backed by cedar/vanilla oak, this elegant and handsomely crafted cabernet has a fresh perfume of violets, cassis and dark plums backed by undertones of dried herbs, chocolate and vanilla. Medium to full in weight, it’s brightly lit, delivering an intense and pristine expression of lightly herbal cool climate flavours of cassis, mulberry and dark plums. (King Valley, 17.5/91, drink 2010-2014+)
Wine: Gapsted Ballerina Canopy Merlot 2001
Wine Review Date: 07/07/2005 Source : Jeremy Oliver, 2006
Wine Tasting Note: A firm, grippy merlot whose dusty, herbal bouquet of sweet red berries, plums and cherries overlie nuances of undergrowth and sweet aromas of cedar and vanilla oak. Medium to full in weight, it’s smooth and supple, presenting a lively, if slightly cooked expression of plums, blackberries and suggestions of currant framed by firm, drying tannins and creamy oak. (King Valley, Limestone Coast, Alpine Valleys, )
Wine: Gapsted Ballerina Canopy Merlot 2002
Wine Review Date: 04/07/2006 Source : Jeremy Oliver, 2006
Wine Tasting Note: A pretty varietal merlot whose herbal, tobaccoey aromas of red cherries, plums and restrained cedar/vanilla oak precede a soft, plump and juicy palate of cherry/plum lfaovurs backed by restrained vanilla oak and framed by fine-grained, powedery tnanikns. There’s a faint herbaceousness that is likely to become more cigarboxy in time. (King Valley, Alpine Valleys, 16.6/88, drink 2007-2010)
Wine: Gapsted Ballerina Canopy Shiraz 2001
Wine Review Date: 07/07/2005 Source : Jeremy Oliver, 2006
Wine Tasting Note: A flavoursome shiraz with under and over-ripe qualities, whose unusually floral bouquet reveals sweet red berries, blood plums and vanilla/cedary oak backed by cloves and pepper, with herbaceous tobaccoey, menthol-like and meaty influences. Framed by slightly sappy and metallic tannins, there’s plenty of bright, jujube-like red berry fruit, but an undercurrent of tobacco, menthol and capsicum. Lacks genuine ripeness and balance. (King Valley, )
Wine: Gapsted Ballerina Canopy Shiraz 2002
Wine Review Date: 04/07/2006 Source : Jeremy Oliver, 2006
Wine Tasting Note: Herbaceous, floral aromas of raspberries and cherries backed by peppery notes of capsicum reveal an under-ripeness also evident of the slightly sappy and green-edged palate. Forward and restrained, lacking great length of fruit, it’s well supported by dusty cedar/vanilla oak. (King Valley, 15.6/85, drink 2007-2010)
Wine: Gapsted Saperavi NV
Wine Review Date: 01/01/2002 Source : Jeremy Oliver, 2006
Wine Tasting Note: Unversed in the attributes of one of Russia's moist widely planted red varieties, I must say I enjoyed the brightness, texture and length of this minty northern Victorian wine. It's spicy licorice-like expression of raspberry, blackberry, plum and maraschino cherry fruit is well-knit with chocolate/vanilla oak and firm, if slightly sappy tannin. (16.8, Drink 2004-2007+, )
Wine: Garry Crittenden 'i' Arneis 1999
Wine Review Date: 01/10/1999 Source : Jeremy Oliver, 2006
Wine Tasting Note: This rare Piedmontese grape has been fashioned into a dusty, savoury and varietally correct wine with attractive nutty apple and pear fruit. It's fresh and fleshy, clean and lively. As the vines mature, so will the length of their wines. (16.7, Drink 2000-2001, )
Wine: Garry Crittenden 'i' Arneis 2003
Wine Review Date: 04/02/2004 Source : Jeremy Oliver, 2006
Wine Tasting Note: A punchy varietal wine whose fresh aromas of pear, apple and peach reveal a hint of chalk and mineral. Luscious, round and smooth, just fractionally hot, with lingering pear/apple fruit culminating in a tangy mineral finish. Bigger and rounder than previous releases. 17.1, drink 2003-2004 ( )
Wine: Garry Crittenden 'i' Arneis 2004
Wine Review Date: 07/09/2005 Source : Jeremy Oliver, 2006
Wine Tasting Note: Fresh, lightly spicy aromas of apple and cooked pear, with clove-like undertones precede a juicy and generous palate punctuated by taut minerally and slightly excessive acidity. Very varietally correct and pristine, with a faintly herbal background, pleasing roundness and plenty of flavour, but just a little too bracing at the finish. (King Valley, )
Wine: Garry Crittenden 'i' Barbera 1996
Wine Review Date: 01/10/1997 Source : Jeremy Oliver, 2006
Wine Tasting Note: Remarkably true to variety with an intense aroma of sweet raspberries, black cherries and chocolate with hints of cedar, rose petals and bitumen. Long and savoury palate, with lingering fine-grained tannins. (18.0, Drink 1998-2001, )
Wine: Garry Crittenden 'i' Barbera 2000
Wine Review Date: 01/12/2001 Source : Jeremy Oliver, 2006
Wine Tasting Note: This vibrant, supple and tight young barbera is fresh, forward and almost counterfeit-like in its varietal qualities. Pungent nicotene, diesoleum and small dark plum/cherry fruit fill the nose and palate, while it finishes long, lightly firm and sour-edged. Great fun. (16.7, Drink 2001-2002+, )
Wine: Garry Crittenden 'i' Barbera 2001
Wine Review Date: 03/07/2004 Source : Jeremy Oliver, 2006
Wine Tasting Note: Highly enjoyable if not entirely flawless barbera with a pungent, slightly wild and reductive, smoky and oily aroma of nicotine and dark cherries. Honest, rustic and uncomplicated, its medium-weight palate offers bright cherry and raspberry flavours before a slightly bitter and reductive finish. It’s long and savoury, with lingering earthy diesel oil flavours. (16.7, 2003-2006)
Wine: Garry Crittenden 'i' Dolcetto 1996
Wine Review Date: 01/10/1997 Source : Jeremy Oliver, 2006
Wine Tasting Note: Superbly presented and defined dolcetto sourced from the Bests vineyard, Great Western. Sweet scents of brandied fruits, almond, fennel, spice and chocolates with a super-intense palate of liqueur cherries, plums and chocolatey fruit. Exemplary length and persistence, with a crisply acid finish and great definition. (17.9, Drink 1998-2001, )
Wine: Garry Crittenden 'i' Dolcetto 1998
Wine Review Date: 01/10/1999 Source : Jeremy Oliver, 2006
Wine Tasting Note: Bursting with ripe cherry/plum fruit but with a distinctly varietal accent of spicy white pepper, aniseed and cloves this lively, approachable and fine-grained wine brings the earthy charm and firm, but tight-knit character of Italian dolcetto to Australian wine. Lingering fruit, savoury long finish. Savoury, with surprising strength. (17.0, Drink 2000-2003, )
Wine: Garry Crittenden 'i' Dolcetto 2002
Wine Review Date: 07/09/2005 Source : Jeremy Oliver, 2006
Wine Tasting Note: Minty, spicy dolcetto with a musky aroma of red cherries, rhubarb and red earth over nuances of mint and eucalypt. Medium in weight, it’s a fine and elegant early-drinker, with pleasing fruitiness framed by dusty tannins. Finishes clean and savoury. (Alpine Valleys, )
Wine: Garry Crittenden 'i' Nebbiolo 1996
Wine Review Date: 01/12/1998 Source : Jeremy Oliver, 2006
Wine Tasting Note: Rich and firm, true to type, this balanced and vibrantly flavoured wine is packed with sweet raspberries, confection, cherries and earthy bitumen flavours. Long, fine-grained and sour to finish, it has a tight, fine-grained extract. (18.1, Drink 2004-2008+, )
Wine: Garry Crittenden 'i' Nebbiolo 1998
Wine Review Date: 01/07/2000 Source : Jeremy Oliver, 2006
Wine Tasting Note: Persistence pays off as Garry Crittenden captures some of the heart and soul of nebbiolo in this powerful, tightly astringent red, whose intense flavours of sweet raspberries, liqueur cherries and plums are presented against a nutty, savoury background of attractive creamy mouthfeel and weight. (18.0, Drink 2003-2006+, )
