Wine: Baileys 1904 Block Shiraz 1999
Wine Review Date: 01/01/2002 Source : Jeremy Oliver, 2006
Wine Tasting Note: Nothing remotely sophisticated or New Wave here - just a deliciously dense, concentrated, robust and old-fashioned shiraz whose tarry, spicy dark plummy fruit is wrapped around firm and sinewy tannins. It finishes long and savoury, with just a suggestion of charry and newish vanilla oak. (18.0, Drink 2011-2019+, )
Wine: Baileys 1904 Block Shiraz 2000
Wine Review Date: 23/07/2004 Source : Jeremy Oliver, 2006
Wine Tasting Note: Sumptuous, well-made shiraz from very ripe fruit, whose spicy and smoky aromas of prunes, currants and leather are handsomely fitted with sweet vanilla and chocolate oak. Very ripe and forward, delivering rich, slightly over-ripened fruit, it’s initially velvet-smooth, but finishes rather raw and blocky. (Glenrowan, 17.3, 2005-2008)
Wine: Baileys 1904 Block Shiraz 2004
Wine Review Date: 20/07/2006 Source : Jeremy Oliver, 2006
Wine Tasting Note: A sumptuous, long and varietal shiraz whose deeply spicy, meaty and plummy aromas of small dark berries, cloves and cinnamon are backed by earthy, rustic nuances and hints of white pepper. Its deeply fruited palate of sweet, dark plums and berries overlies a tight, firm spine of powdery tannins, finishing long and persistent, with lingering sweet fruit and leathery undertones. (Glenrowan, 18.3/94, drink 2016-2024)
Wine: Baileys 1920's Block Shiraz 1998
Wine Review Date: 01/07/2000 Source : Jeremy Oliver, 2006
Wine Tasting Note: A dark and chunky but high quality red from Victoria's north-east whose spicy, ripe and almost confection-like jammy and berry aromas precede a rich, smooth palate of sour-edged cherry/plum fruit, astringent tannins and sweet, smoky vanilla American oak. (18.2, Drink 2010+, )
Wine: Baileys 1920's Block Shiraz 1999
Wine Review Date: 01/01/2002 Source : Jeremy Oliver, 2006
Wine Tasting Note: There's exceptional value for money in this very smooth and seductive older-styled shiraz. Sure, its tarry, treacle and licorice-like fruit borders on the raisined and porty, but it presents an excellent length of rich, powerful fruit, some suggestions of smoky new oak and rather classy, firm and tight-knit drying tannin. (17.6, Drink 2011-2019, )
Wine: Baileys 1920s Block Shiraz 2001
Wine Review Date: 23/07/2004 Source : Jeremy Oliver, 2006
Wine Tasting Note: Ageing, rather dehydrated shiraz whose meaty, tarry aromas of berries, currants and prunes reveal assertive oak and earthy, leathery undertones. Moderately full in weight, it’s firm and tannic, with a meaty, up-front palate of concentrated but tiring fruit, drying out towards the finish. (Glenrowan, 16.0, 2003-2006)
Wine: Baileys 1920s Block Shiraz 2003
Wine Review Date: 27/06/2005 Source : Jeremy Oliver, 2006
Wine Tasting Note: A typically ripe and juicy northeast Victorian red of power and structure. Brooding and rather restrained, its lightly minty and earthy aromas of dark plums, cassis and liqueur chocolates reveal spicy suggestions of cloves, white pepper and cinnamon over very measured nuances of vanilla oak. Richly flavoured with juicy black fruits, dark olives and a hint of tarriness, it’s firm and astringent, just staying the right side of over-ripeness. (NE Victoria, )
Wine: Baileys 1920s Block Shiraz 2005
Wine Review Date: 06/07/2006 Source : Jeremy Oliver, 2006
Wine Tasting Note: A natural, stable and well-made wine with a future. Its smoky fragrance of sweet blackberries, cassis and violets is backed by spicy nuances of cloves, cinnamon and nutmeg, with a whiff of rosemary. Sumptuous and deeply concentrated, its thick, full-bodied palate backs its evenly ripened fruit with a firm spine of chalky tannin and meaty, mineral undertones. Rustic but well crafted, with a touch of attitude. (North East Victoria, 93, drink 2017-2025+)
Wine: Baileys Shiraz 2003
Wine Review Date: 23/07/2004 Source : Jeremy Oliver, 2006
Wine Tasting Note: Generous, punchy and flavoursome shiraz with a pungent, spicy and confiture-like aroma of blackberries and raspberries over roasted, bubblegum-like oak. There’s volume and brightness aplenty of vibrant blackberry, plum and menthol-like fruit. Framed by fine but firm tannins, it’s well set for a little cellaring. (Glenrowan, 17.2, 2008-2011)
Wine: Baileys Shiraz 2004
Wine Review Date: 06/09/2006 Source : Jeremy Oliver, 2006
Wine Tasting Note: A firm, rustic shiraz that makes up in depth and strength what it might lack in complexity. Sweet aromas of blackberries and slightly raisined fruit are assertively backed by smoky, coffee-like dark chocolate oak. Ripe and sumptuous, its lingering palate of dark berries, plums and spice is coated with drying, powdery tannins and reveals a meaty aspect. (North East Victoria, 89, drink 2010-2013+)
Wine: Baldivis Estate Zig Zag Cabernet Merlot 2000
Wine Review Date: 01/09/2001 Source : Jeremy Oliver, 2006
Wine Tasting Note: It takes some talent, I expect, to marry such ordinary fruit with such complementary oak. This is a cooked, earthy, weedy and medicinal red whose stale, brackish fruit does offer some confection-like semi-ripeness, but is entirely devoid of length and structure. (14.0, Drink 2001-2002, )
Wine: Balgownie Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 1998
Wine Review Date: 01/12/1999 Source : Jeremy Oliver, 2006
Wine Tasting Note: Firm, minty and long-living Victorian cabernet whose ripe heady aromas of violets, cassis, plums and cedary/vanilla oak, precede an intense, forward but sumptuously creamy palate of piercing ripe fruit wrapped around firm ripe tannins. (17.7, Drink 2006-2012+, )
Wine: Balgownie Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 1999
Wine Review Date: 01/05/2001 Source : Jeremy Oliver, 2006
Wine Tasting Note: Big modern ripe and oaky, its spicy mocha and cedar/vanilla oak rather overshadows its intense cassis, plum and prune fruit qualities. It's otherwise sound, with slightly hard-edged tannins and a lingering saltiness. (16.8, Drink 2004-2007+, )
Wine: Balgownie Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2000
Wine Review Date: 01/04/2002 Source : Jeremy Oliver, 2006
Wine Tasting Note: Rather more ripe than I'd really prefer, but a firm, strong Bendigo cabernet with undoubted cellaring quality. Porty, jammy aromas of lightly cooked dark fruits, fresh cassis and plums, licorice, dark olives and animal hide precede a heavily extracted palate of strength and substance. Its ripe fruits give lift to its earthy, meaty and gamey qualities. (17.3, Drink 2012-2020, )
Wine: Balgownie Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2002
Wine Review Date: 12/05/2004 Source : Jeremy Oliver, 2006
Wine Tasting Note: Very firm, structured cabernet of refinement and balance. Its earthy fragrance of violets and rose petals, cassis, plums and blackberries overlies tightly integrated cedar/chocolate/vanilla oak and scents of dried herbs. Robust and linear, it delivers piercing, penetrative flavours of dark berries and plums over astringent, bony tannins. Wait for it. 18.2, drink 2014-2022+. (Bendigo, )
Wine: Balgownie Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2003
Wine Review Date: 14/06/2005 Source : Jeremy Oliver, 2006
Wine Tasting Note: Firm and structured, this long-term central Victorian red has a minty perfume of violets and cassis over smoky undertones of cedar/vanilla oak and a whiff of menthol. Earthy and leathery, its minty dark plum and berry flavours are framed by a bony spine of drying tannins. Pleasing length and brightness. (Bendigo, )
Wine: Balgownie Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2004
Wine Review Date: 01/07/2006 Source : Jeremy Oliver, 2006
Wine Tasting Note: A traditional Bendigo cabernet of tremendous depth, ripeness and regional intensity. Scented with spicy, menthol-like aromas of cassis, dark plums and sweet oak, it reveals floral, violet-like undertones. Firm and fine-grained, its profound expression of ripe, slightly jammy red and black berry/plum fruit is framed by firm, fine tannins and finishes with minty suggestions of eucalypt. Modestly alcoholic, given its richness and ripeness. (Bendigo, )
Wine: Balgownie Estate Shiraz 2002
Wine Review Date: 09/06/2004 Source : Jeremy Oliver, 2006
Wine Tasting Note: Excellent central Victorian shiraz with a sneezy black pepper aroma of blackberries and dark plums laced with cinnamon, cloves and tightly knit chocolate/vanilla oak. There’s also an earthy and slightly funky meatiness present throughout its sumptuous and intensely flavoured palate of briary and spotlessly clean dark fruit flavours. Framed by velvet-smooth but firm tannins, it’s an excellent wine of first-rate balance and integration. 18.5, drink 2010-2014+
Wine: Balgownie Estate Shiraz 2003
Wine Review Date: 09/04/2005 Source : Jeremy Oliver, 2006
Wine Tasting Note: A spicy, peppery and lightly minty shiraz of considerable meaty, earthy charm and fineness. Its penetrative, floral and musky aromas of blackcurrants and dark plums reveal reductive charcuterie-like undertones, while its palate is classically structured and elegant on one hand; firm and sinewy on the other. Its pure, deep berry flavours are entwined with fine, bony tannins and sweet creamy/vanilla oak, with an undercurrent of mint and menthol. (Bendigo, )
Wine: Balgownie Estate Shiraz 2004
Wine Review Date: 24/03/2006 Source : Jeremy Oliver, 2006
Wine Tasting Note: A minty central Victorian shiraz whose intense aromas of cassis, dark plums, dark chocolate and cedar oak are backed by suggestions of menthol, white pepper, cloves and cinnamon. Its firm, somewhat bony palate is slightly closed, but still delivers ripe dark fruit flavours and polished cedar/vanilla oak over nuances of dried herbs. Finishing tight and savoury, it lacks the depth and complexity of previous recent vintages, but delivers pleasing weight and structure. (Bendigo, )
