"Portet is now ensconced in the Yarra Valley and is producing some stunning wines. His late-disgorged brut rose is arguably the best sparkling rose in the country and his reputation is enhanced by his table wines. His sauvignon blanc is delightful, a grippy wine with peach and nectarine flavours dominant and a touch of lychee present. Like many others, Portet has sought out Heathcote fruit for his highly regarded shiraz, but I really like his cabernet. Dark and rich, the nose is dominated by black fruits and the body is full, intense and finishes with some serious tannins. Half and hour opening, the wine had absorbed some air and had blossomed into a well-blanced, structured wine of real character and substance. A few hours later the wine was even better."
