| Turning Japanese? Not quite…on
a Friday night…
Nobu
Crown Melbourne, Southbank, Victoria
Ooooooo the anticipation!
After a one-month long wait for our booking, the anticipation
was nearly too much to bare. I was, of course, so excited
that I knocked over my first glass of French when we were
waiting in the orange and chocolate hues of the upstairs bar
for our table to be prepared.
No problems, all cleaned up in a flash.
As we descended the staircase to what I was thinking was going
to be heaven, I must say I was taken aback by the bustling
activity and what seemed like many, many, too many staff.
This place did not have the fine-dining feeling I was expecting.
It was rather noisy actually. I think I would have been just
as happy upstairs in the swish bar, and wouldn’t have
to wait one month for a table. Whilst the bar had a feeling
of a groovy New York hang-out, the restaurant felt more like
a tabaret bistro.
Staff were friendly enough, however too busy to actually
know that our glass was empty! (shocking!) So I guess we kept
weighing up do we prefer to just sit pretty and take in the
bustling environment, or do we keep attempting to communicate
by sign language as we couldn’t hear any of our own
conversations over the noise.
What did we eat?
Edamame, Sashimi Tacos, Octopus Carpaccio, Beef Fillet Tataki
(absolute winner), lobster salad, mixture of red fish sushi
/ sashimi, Black Cod (signature dish), petit fours and satandagi
(satan all right, chocolate heaven)
What did we drink?
Veuve
Cliquot Yellow Label NV, Reims, FRANCE (of
course!) the lovely classic that never fails to disappoint.
The orange label matched our surroundings perfectly. www.cellardor.com.au
price $76.48 a bottle,(a lot better than Nobu I can tell you!!)
Neudorf
Vineyards Brightwater Pinot Gris, Nelson NZ.
The crispness of this lovely apple-pie Pinot Gris set off
the gorgeous flavours of the food effortlessly. www.cellardor.com.au
price $27.67 a bottle (cheap cheap!)
Two
Hands Moscato,Barossa Valley, SA, an ever
so fun and tickley way to finish off. www.cellardor.com.au
price $15.60 a bottle (great price for you).
In short great food, not traditional Japanese however, and
you’ll have much more fun upstairs in the bar, no hassles,
no reservations necessary and extensive bar menu to boot!!
Til next time, Chardanae on location....
